TikTok is introducing a fresh option that permits them to cut down on the volume of artificial intelligence-produced content appearing in their streams. This move comes as the service disclosed that it now features more than 1 bn AI videos.
Pilot Phase and Launch
This change is in a pilot phase over the following weeks before a full-scale release. This shift coincides with a rise in content created by AI, fueled by new AI video creators.
AI Proliferation Online
It has been noted that nearly a tenth of the fastest-growing video streams on a competing service primarily display clips produced artificially. A large amount of this content is considered low-quality AI content, a term for poor-quality, factory-style content that is often nonsensical or surreal.
“We know from our community that numerous viewers enjoy content made with AI tools, from AI artwork to informative clips, and we aim to give people the ability to increase or decrease of that, based on their own choices,” commented a company executive.
Scale of AI Content
TikTok shared that there are currently 1.3 billion videos on its app labeled as artificially created. In total, more than 100 m pieces of content are uploaded to the service daily, making AI-generated material a limited percentage of its overall inventory.
Customizing Your Feed
Members will be able to limit or boost the level of AI-generated videos they view by using the “manage topic” option in the app and choosing “AI-generated content”. Other topics that can already be adjusted under the tool cover current affairs, style, aesthetics, and movement.
Content Labeling and Policies
The platform’s rules mandate users to label convincing AI-generated content, and it prohibits malicious fake videos of public figures or emergencies. Any authentic-looking artificial content that is not labeled can be deleted under its terms of service.
Additionally, the platform will henceforth add an AI-generated label to content made using its built-in AI features, or identified by an industry-wide initiative for recognizing content made by AI. This action is aimed to stop users from attempting to evade the tagging system.
AI Literacy Programs
The company is also introducing a two million dollar awareness program for specialists and organizations to create learning resources about ethical AI use. This initiative will support educational bodies focused on educating computer science.
Moderation Strategy
The platform has justified its safety measures, following discussion over intentions to cut jobs for a large number of review team members in the UK. The company is set to cut hundreds of positions in its user protection team in the UK capital, with trade unions and internet security professionals expressing worry that staff are being displaced by AI moderation.
A trust and safety lead stated that staff-based oversight would still have a role, but AI can safeguard staff by eliminating the most harmful content ahead of it gets reviewed by humans. The company stated a notable drop in shocking and graphic content reviewed by content reviewers over the past year due to the use of its automated systems.
It is vital to balance humans and technology to maintain a secure environment,” she said. “We’ll have people as integral to the approach, but we also think it’s highly necessary to reduce exposure to dangerous material as rapidly, which is why a lot of the machine support is really helping us operate efficiently.”
