At least thirteen people lose their lives and 98 wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” declared the country's president.

The official confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the year before. This project was closely associated with his administration's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The development of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in public projects. They were completed at an accelerated pace, defying predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked persistent questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an immediate halt in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This halt was suggested while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."

In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these strategic undertakings.
